Melissa is the owner of Happyditty Gluten Free Bakery in Kingston, ON. I have been buying all my cakes and baked goods from her since moving to Kingston and she is absolutely awesome. She can accommodate all dietary needs, and even can make Vegan items! I have gotten my Reese’s Birthday Cake which was absolutely a peanut butter DREAM and then at least once or twice a month I’m getting the mixed baked good packs she puts together. The bakery is actually located in her home, and she has two separate kitchens one for her Gluten Free baking located on a separate floor from the rest of the house to ensure no cross contamination.72729560_2461734167435639_8878610171576713216_n

Be sure to contact Melissa for all your GF needs in Kingston- she is really great at taking whatever you have in mind and making it with her own twist. Everything is always fantastic and delicious and I’m always telling everyone I know to order from her.

Luce  Hair Salon is located in Kingston, ON and actually has 3 different locations across the city. Downtown on Princess St, in the West End on Midland Ave across from Walmart,  as well as in the East End of the city. 3 Convenient locations, and you can book your appointment online through their convenient online booking system.

My hair stylist is also my longtime childhood friend Erica D. We grew up together and went to school together so when I moved back to Kingston and needed to find a hair stylist I knew Erica would be the one! Even better, when I moved to the West End of the city, so did she when the West End studio opened up earlier this summer. She is truly skilled, and I send her all my crazy hair colour ideas and she transforms my hair . She tells me if its a Pinterest dream or not, and then gives me the best suggestions for my current hair state.

I deal with a lot of dry hair, and excessive hair loss. Erica always knows exactly what my hair needs to get it back to health. I have always thinned my hair out using a razor with the scissors. However my hair was battling a lot of frizziness recently so Erica suggested that we let that grow out a little. I’m anti-layers (hello frizz), so I’ll never ever get layers. I’m old school with my long hair!

Be sure to click here to use the convenient online booking system, make sure to mention my blog post when you book and that you saw it here!

Hilton Markham/Toronto Suites

Hilton Markham/Toronto Suites

fullsizeoutput_6e5Do any of you have jobs that require travel? If you’re new to my blog, and me, then you may not know that along with blogging I do also have a day job. I work from home luckily, but usually every few months I have to go my work office which is located in Markham, ON.

First time having to travel since moving to Kingston, and I knew that the Hilton Markham/Toronto Suites was going to be where I stayed. This hotel is stunning and has everything humanly possible to survive.  Our checking was a breeze, we got the pool hours and the menu for the restaurant before we headed out to check out room.

image1-1Our room was MASSIVE to say the least. It was a giant circle, with a Dining Room, Living room, bedroom with king size bed and bathroom. The room was filled with bright lights and marble tiles and black accent furniture. In the living room there was a sink, microwave, coffee maker and a mini fridge.

The bathroom did not have a bathtub only a shower, and oddly enough the bathroom is where we had most of the “negative” experience. The bathroom had an odd smell of urine, that got stronger the longer we stayed. Also, there was no actual shower door, so it was exposed and the water leaked all over the bathroom floor making it impossible to keep dry.

fullsizeoutput_6e6Included in our stay we got the continental breakfast for $10 each. Food wise this place knew what was up when it comes to Celiac Disease. The chef personally came out to greet me and offered me an array of items he could make me for breakfast. We settled on Eggs Benedict which is a personal fave. The fact the Chef took the time to come and introduce himself and offer to make me a personalized meal which he delivered out all on his own was above and beyond. I couldn’t get too many photos as I wound up being almost late for work but can assure you that the breakfast & service was phenomenal.

fullsizeoutput_6e4

Upon checking out, we were asked how our stay was. The only thing we really brought up was the bathroom smell, which the Manager offered a lunch for my boyfriend on the house due to that issue. That shows me that they take issues very seriously and aspire to give the best experience to their staff. Thank you to Anna and the staff for taking such great care of us. We will definitely be back!

Do’s & Dont’s of Working From Home

Do’s & Dont’s of Working From Home

48394213_2072136909764697_2331706103974330368_n

For those of us that live and work at home finding a balance can be very tough. It can take years to get into a proper work/home life rhythm and without being very strict on yourself it can take even longer.

I’ve been working at home for coming up on 3 years now, after getting in a car accident of December 2016 and migraines became constant, I was able to work and do my job from home. My day job is in a call centre, so I work in my in home office taking customer calls daily.

Over the years I’ve found things that do and don’t work for me, so I figured I would share them below.

IMG_8050

The Do’s:

  • Set up your home office to be as comfortable as possible. If you prefer lots of sunshine, or plants, make sure that your setup is functional and comfy for you.
  • Ensure everyone in your household respects your work hours. While my schedule is set for me, and I have bosses to answer to throughout the day, you may not. If your self employed then you must set out specific work hours, and let everyone know when you will be unavailable.
  • MEAL PREP! I still live off meal prepping even working at home. It’s not like you can run out and grab some lunch so make sure your fridge is stocked with healthy, easy to grab snacks and meals. I’m a snacker so I just make sure to have lots of fruits and veggies, crackers, cheese, etc type of snacks on hand.

The Dont’s:

  • Don’t forget to shower every day. It can be hard to feel like you “have” to as its not like you’re out sweating or doing a physically taxing job.
  • Don’t let others interrupt you when you’re working. I have a hard time staying on task, my ability to focus has deteriorated a lot since my car accident and it becomes very stressful and overwhelming for me if my mind gets away by a distraction.
  • Don’t sleep in, or have any reason to be late. It’s literally the worst thing if you work at home and are late for work. Set alarms, write start times down, just don’t be late!
  • Don’t drink too much caffeine. I’m the worst for this as I have a tendency to overdo it, but I’m trying. I’ve purchased half-caf coffees to try and consciously cut back.

I hope these tips were helpful to you, and that you can make your work from home job the best it can be. Those of us that can work from home are extremely lucky to do so, and its important that we take care of ourselves and our time.

Top 5 Tips & Tricks for Welcoming a new Puppy into your family

Top 5 Tips & Tricks for Welcoming a new Puppy into your family

53748247_2308332852768435_353333739532582912_n

Well. Here we are, exactly ONE WEEK away from bringing home our new puppy from Ottawa! We’re getting a Mini Dapple Dachshund and we have decided on the name Rei (Portuguese for King) for our little man.

It’s been nearly a decade since I had a puppy last (Rex will be ten in April!) and so while preparing for our puppy, I realized creating a list of all the things to remember and purchase before the puppy arrives is important. This was a great refresher for me also, and really helped me to feel 100% ready for next week.

70898019_2452819414986444_2888415323885666304_n

  1. If you’re a first time dog owner, it is a good idea to get some books on the breed of dog you’re getting. Ask your vet for suggestions, or even local animal trainers may have suggestions for good books. Researching the ins and outs of the breed you are going to be living with is really crucial. Every breed has different temperisms and mannerisms and its important to become comfortable with them ahead of time.
  2. Crate training!! It is so important to buy a crate for your puppy. With Rex, I crate trained him until he could be trusted and now he never goes in his kennel ever. He would sleep in his crate as a puppy and also would go in when I would leave the house. It became a safe place for him and I do feel it helped him become a better dog. Amazon has a great selection of dog crates of all shapes and sizes.
  3. Research local dog trainers. It’s important to take your puppy to at least a handful of training sessions, because you are learning too. I know it seems like a lot of money, but often there are coupons for Petsmart and even maybe in local papers or check Facebook marketplace. Training sessions will be helpful for both yourself AND your puppy learn.
  4. Decide ahead of time who your vet will be. Even if that is your current vet its best to let them know and get quotes for things like shots and fixing surgery. The sooner you have that idea the sooner you can mentally work it into your puppy budget in order to make your purchases in order of importance. Often vets will offer free puppy packages, or coupons for a local pet store. Be sure to ask what they have available for freebies!
  5. Be ready to open your heart up. I am literally bursting every day waiting to be with our puppy. Dogs and I have always had a special bond, and I truly find dogs the most loving creatures on the planet. I’ve been searching and attempting to get a second dog for quite a few years. This situation just literally fell into our laps and we could not say no. To say we are excited is an understatement- but we’re very ready to love our little Rei!

Fall Fashion with Joe Fresh

Fall Fashion with Joe Fresh

IMG_0204

Lately I have been attending a ton more family events. My boyfriends family gets together very often, and there has been many times that Church has been involved, or a nice meal. I have had to find ways to manage frequent body temperature changes, as well as fitting the bill for presentableness.

After getting a President’s Choice Mastercard earlier this year, I have been optimizing ways to collect points. Joe Fresh has always been in my budget, but sizing tends to be an issue so its always been hit or miss. Recently though, I’ve ben hitting the mark with Joe Fresh purchases. This dress is so great I also got it in black, but it is absolutely adorable.

There is a little button closure at the back, and the cinched waist is very cute. I have since gotten a beige belt that goes with it from my mom to borrow for this outfit and it completes it.

IMG_0241

This dress was on sale for $14.99 and I had 10% off from my first order. I also got free shipping from being a PC Insider, and plenty of bonus points for my PC Optimum. I also maximized the points earned by using my PC Mastercard.
This dress is such a soft material, and these tights I got in store at Joe Fresh for only $2.97 on clearance. They even have proper foot holes so you won’t wear them out too early by moving the feet spots around. The soft, loose fit combined with the pattern and pockets makes it a total win for me, and so now I have two.

Its also extremely modest which is something I have always felt cautious of. I have never been much of a revealing dresser, more modest overall. The length of this dress also adds to how comfortable it is.

This past Labour Day long weekend, I was downtown just walking around enjoying the hustle and bustle of Queens & SLC Move in weekend. We decided to go checkout the Market and just do some people watching, taking in the sights and smells of downtown. While down there we had remembered that BLU Martini had Gluten Free fish & Chips, and so we decided to go check them out and find out how gluten free they actually were.

fullsizeoutput_6df

Contrary to my fears, they have a dedicated fryer. Life changing. We immediately decided to share lunch and enjoy a drink on the patio. I got a virgin margarita and we dove right into the menu. We were advised everything on the menu can be adjusted to be gluten free, but they also advised their menu is basically all gluten free, they have some bread to dip with some of the meals but that bread is kept and prepped in a totally separate area of the kitchen. They really seem to know the process for keeping things celiac safe. We decided on the Fish & Chips, and the Coconut shrimp as our appetizer. The Coconut shrimp had a pineapple curry dip which was fantastic. They were hot, sweet and the perfect amount of crunchy goodness.

fullsizeoutput_6de

The Fish & Chips. OH MY GOSH. Beyond to die for. The coleslaw that came with it was extremely spicy so it was the black sheep on the plate, but my boyfriend ate it as I can’t handle spice. The fish had a batter that seemed to be some sort of corn flake type cereal and a rice flour blend. It worked well, I’d say skip the huge chunks of cereal but the rice flour blend was so tasty. Also the fries were amazing obviously, but I’m also a fry freak so any chance I get to eat fries I certainly take. The french fries were seasoned perfectly, as was the tartar sauce.

fullsizeoutput_6e0

The menu is super easy to read, next time I’ll be getting the chicken fingers and french fries, and more than likely even more. The menu items are clearly marked with a green GF – but they can adjust all the menu items to be gluten free. Overall this place is definitely Celiac Safe, however please always advise your server of your requirements as this was my experience only and yours will be different. I have done the foot work and asked these questions but things change frequently so I always leave a disclaimer to be your own advocate and only order what you feel is safe based on the information you have at the time of ordering.

Thanks for reading friends,

Erin xo

Kelly’s In The County

Kelly’s In The County

https---cdn.evbuc.com-images-66030291-318182232073-1-original.20190720-121105

On August 10 & 11, 2019 one my my favourite bakeries finally opened its doors and invited Prince Edward County to try their delicious treats at their pop-up shoppe.

Kelly’s Bake Shoppe

image4

Going back to about 2015/2016 was when I first discovered Kelly’s Bake Shoppe and officially became a part of “Kelly’s Tribe.”

Kelly Childs and Erin Weatherbee are the co-owners and also super fantastic mother-daughter duo who run the Kelly’s ship! These women are idols to me, and I love their determination and commitment to their customers. I actually reached out to both before hand to introduce myself, I was really hoping to meet them face to face to really thank them for all they are doing.

Located at 13633 Loyalist Parkway in Picton, ON its just a short drive for me from Kingston, and perfectly situation for all those great beach days in the Summer. I bought something of everything there- including a Nanimo Ice cream in which we are savouring and will keep it in the freezer until the day comes that we eat it.

image1-3
So what is so great about Kelly’s In The County? Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Peanut Free, Vegan, and Egg Free (just to name a few). They use natural colouring (Hello Beets!!) and never put any added junk in their products. I saw a post on instagram of someone who brought their daughter who has never been able to eat from a bakery due to her anaphylactic allergies and all I can think is that this is what it’s all about. These women are literally changing lives of so many people! You are absolutely safe to eat here as it is 100% gluten free! Completely Celiac Safe.

image3

We have to wait until next year for the official opening but I want to thank Kelly and Erin for coming this way and giving us a taste of what is to come. I am very excited and cannot express enough gratitude for them and all they are doing for the Celiac Community.
