Blue Blocking Glasses are one more thing that I have recently learned about to help improve the frequency of my migraines. Blue lights can really trigger migraine sufferers, as well as just light in general. I have extreme light sensitivity that is debilitating some days, so when I had read about these and they were new to me, I decided I’d give them a try. I have linked my purchase below through Amazon, and they are around $20 retail.  They are extremely affordable and completely worth it. I work at home, and do all my blogging on my computer so having Blue Blocking glasses are very important and helpful to adjusting the light sensitivity I experience day to day. There’s so many new, different, and unheard of treatments and aids for migraine intensity and frequency. Most I have tried, but when I find something new, and it is actually something I can afford to invest in, I totally do. These have changed a lot for me and I’m very happy with them.

Chronic Migraines

Chronic Migraines

I have suffered from Chronic Migraines for years now. They started as a teenager for no real reason. Many people develop Chronic Migraines from a traumatic accident, or a brain growth. Those of us that have Chronic Migraines with no particular reason are almost in a worse position. With no evident reason as to why I suffer, its harder to treat.

3 Years ago I was blessed to be referred to my Pain Management Doctor, Dr. Jeff Matheson. He has single handedly helped me heal multiple health issues I have come across over the years. He always aims for the most natural treatment there is, and is always there to lend an ear when I’m brainstorming a potential “fix”. Through Dr. Matheson I receive weekly nerve blocker injections in my neck, shoulders, and back. These nerve blockers help to numb some of the pain I experience on a daily basis. I also get Botox every 90 days as well. All of this is just for maintenance. Because there is no one cause of my migraines, it is hard to just fix. Some people can have surgery, or just need time to heal the injury in which is causing the chronic pain.

I am heavily affected by hormonal, as well as weather changes. Either of those can cause me to be bed ridden for days. Unable to drive, or move to far. Migraines, and the Chronic Pain I experience in my shoulder can be absolutely debilitating.  Luckily I am able to see Dr. Matheson in a pinch if I need too, and he is able to help with certain “last resort” fixes. I have tried about every medication on the market, and truthfully only the very strong pain killers make it tolerable on the bad days.

I see a chiropractor often as well, and get massage therapy as often as I can. I also use plenty of essential oils and roll them all over my temples, neck, shoulder, etc. It’s really just about maintaining because I have more days of the week in pain that I do without. Extreme heat, humidity, or extreme bitter cold cause bad migraines. Overcast weather is another one. It’s really unpredictable, and hard to manage. With the help of Dr. Matheson I am able to live as pain free probably as humanly possible though.

Full Moons + Migraine

Full Moons + Migraine

Any of my fellow migraine sufferers been struggling this week? I have. This entire week I’ve been battling a never ending migraine and I couldn’t figure out why. Yeah the weather has been terrible, which is really what I was blaming the migraine on. But then I read the news this morning and this evening we are expecting a Full Moon. A strawberry moon to be exact.

So how exactly does a Full Moon cause migraines? Well Scientists and doctors aren’t sure of why migraines can be triggered by the lunar cycle however a certain number of theories are floating around:

  1. The full moon can disrupt sleep; for me personally, I can’t ever sleep very well. So the extreme lack of sleep this week has definitely not aided in kicking this migraine to the curb.
  2. The full moon can change levels of serotonin. Serotonin is a big factor when it comes to migraines; when the levels of that neurotransmitter change, a migraine is often triggered.
  3. Some women’s menstrual cycles revolve with the moon, and I’ve been expecting mine this weekend, so probably a double whammy for me!
  4. We are about 70-80% water.  Changes in barometric pressure affect me heavily: when the weather is hot and humid I’m definitely plagued with a migraine. When it is overcast and cloudy, prime time as well. Weather is so unpredictable in the past year and this has been a huge problem for me.

So what have I done this week to try and help this migraine? I say that, because how often do friends, family members, or even strangers decide to say “Hey have you tried this?” And all I can think is that I have tried virtually every drug, treatment, natural remedy, etc. At this point its just about acceptance, and making it work when I have one.

  • I have been taking Tremadol, and Tylenol 3 consistently to combat the pain (I have had to work all week due to the long weekend so I could not afford to take a sick day to recover)
  •  I have been taking large amounts of Magnesium & Melatonin at bed time to try and get my body to sleep.
  • Long walks with a hat, sunscreen, and as much  coverage as I can. Although sun can make it worse, for me, it is important to get fresh air, and move my body. The more I sit, the worse I truly find it gets because the blood isn’t moving in my body and I can just feel it swooshing around in my brain.
  • Ice, Ice, Baby. Yep, good old ice packs! Neck, Shoulders, temples, etc.
  • I had Acupuncture & Osteopath on Monday, as well as had my weekly nerve blockers, B12 & Iron shot on Tuesday.
  • Coffee, and Coke. I find the caffeine in Coffee when I wake up might make the pain a little less severe, and the cold carbonation and caffeine from Coca Cola can temporarily release the pain. Plus, any form of hydration is good (in my opinion).

I hope you all can find some relief tonight if you have been suffering this week! Let me know how the moon affects you!

Organic Salon & Spa

Organic Salon & Spa

Organic Salon & Spa in Oshawa invited me in for a complimentary Colour & Style. I really jumped at this opportunity. I don’t dye my hair often, but I”m always conscious off the horrible chemicals that are typically used and the smell usually causes a migraine as well.

Organic Salon & Spa uses Eufora products, and they are either Low Ammonia, or No Ammonia! That’s pretty fantastic if you ask me. There is so much wonderful things about this spa that has me bursting with excitement. They have tons of Gluten Free hair products, Eufora is currently switching all Gluten out of their products which is great. When you go, just ask to read the bottles! They will give them to you as they want you comfortable and to have a relaxing experience.

Upon entering they offered me some coffee as well as A1 Gluten Free Gals tarts. Totally ups the experience! They are actually located to the left of A1 Gluten Free Gals, so next time you grab your goodies go in and check out the Salon! It’s beautiful and really a great salon. One huge amazing thing these people do is give back to the Community. They have a jar on the desk that they accept donations for causes close to their heart. They volunteer in the community, as well as offer hair cuts to at youth risk who are looking to gain employment. They truly believe in community involvement and it shows in their passionate work!

They are a Green Circle Salon- what does this mean? It means they have a small carbon footprint, they “recycle” all aluminum foil, left over hair colour, swept up hair, etc. The amount of waste they manage to turn into something positive is so rare! It makes such a difference for the environment and the fact they want to be as Eco-Friendly is possible can be so hard to accomplish but they are truly committed! Owner Tanya explained to me that she wanted to create an Organic Enviroment because as a hair stylist, you’re spending all your time at your job. So constantly breathing in the harsh chemicals that a usual salon may have, she did not feel was good for her employees or customers. The salon does not smell at all!! I was so happy, as those smells typically trigger a migraine for me. It’s the little things that Tanya thinks of that truly creates a different experience.

Chad was the one who did my hair… I wanted to keep my natural brown hair, just cover up my Grey’s and add some pops of colour to the brunette! I’m really into the colour he gave me and it looks so stunning. The process was a bit longer due to not using harsh chemicals, but in the end its totally worth it. I cannot believe how stunning my hair colour is. I feel way more confident and refreshed!

When my toner was toning (haha) I got a deep conditioning. The Deep Conditioning was from the Eufora Men’s line. The reason why I loved it so much was because it contains Menthol, which is a much stronger version of Peppermint. You guys know how often I get migraines, and so to have this deep menthol cooling my scalp was life changing. I did buy one to take home because I will literally spend any amount of money to get some migraine relief!

This spa is really something wonderful and if you are someone who is cautious about what you put on your body, this is the place to go. They love Organic just as much as I do and they are a really awesome team! Chad went above and beyond for my experience and I will absolutely be returning!!

When you call to book, mention my page & when you book with Chad you can get 15% off your services!
